I'm not sure what the weather is like where you live but it's August in Texas and its HOT!! We have had heat advisories every day for the last week and it will be 105*+ every day this week. So here you are growing a baby and trying to stay cool and hydrated when it feels like an air fryer outside. My clients probably get tired of me asking them "are you hydrated? how much have you had to drink today?"

Hydration is important to every stage of life but especially so when you are pregnant. Why exactly? Glad you asked.

  • Your babies first home is floating in a womb filled with amniotic fluid and your body needs water to make the amniotic fluid. The fluid protects baby and is essential for their growth and development.

  • Water transports nutrients through your bloodstream to the various parts of your body and to the placenta. Add some electrolytes to your water 2 or 3 times a day when it is hot outside or you are physically active.

  • Being dehydrated can cause premature contractions. It can also amniotic fluid levels to be low.

  • Proper hydration can assist in reducing annoying pregnancy symptoms like swelling, constipation, heartburn, and morning sickness.

Some preferred electrolytes are LMNT, Ultima or any other one that isn't sweetened with sugar or artificial sweeteners and doesn't use artificial colors.

How much is enough? Always check with your provider but a good goal is 64-96oz a day. Carry your water bottle with you. Set reminders in your phone to keep you on track throughout the day. I think there are even water tracking apps that may be helpful. If plain water is difficult to consume, flavor it with electrolyte powder, lime or lemon juice, cucumber slices, mint or your favorite fruit. Sipping your water throughout the day is more favorable than chugging it all at once.

Stay cool and hydrated- fall will be here soon... right??
