Did you know that 50% of first time moms have a hospital induction? Even though there is NO evidence that an induction is helpful nor necessary. The 39-week induction seems to have become standard of care for many providers. The best way to avoid an induction is to say "No" when asked by your provider. But that's a topic for another conversation.

Every woman finds herself more than ready to have baby in her arms around the 36 week timeframe. There are things you can do to help prepare your body for the upcoming birth. Want to increase your chances for spontaneous labor?

  1. Research shows eating 6 dates a day beginning at 37/38 weeks can increase your chance for a spontaneous labor. They can be added to a smoothing or dip them in peanut butter and chocolate for a peanut butter cup inspired treat.

  2. Acupuncture starting at 37 weeks can help to ripen the cervix. Research shows it reduces the risk of induction, cesarean and epidural use.

  3. Visit a Webster trained chiropractor. This method is designed to balance the pelvic muscles and ligaments which can encourage baby to move into the optimal head-down vertex position.

  4. Spending time doing figure 8's on a birth ball, curb walking or walking sideways up the stairs can help baby's head to engage in the pelvis. Pressure from baby's head on the cervix is one of the triggers for spontaneous labor.

Need more help when discussing induction with your provider? Hire a birth doula. A doula can give you the right questions to ask your provider so you can make an informed decision.
